An essay by Sue Thomas titled The Gravity of Mary Prince's 'History' has been published in Britain's BLACK Past, (edited by Gretchen H. Gerzina, Liverpool University Press, 2020). The author discusses Joscelyn Gardner's video installation, Black Mary; or Molly, 'Princess of Wales', that was shown at the Bermuda National Gallery in 2016. This experimental opera, reenacted by live performers on a digitally animated toy theatre stage, presents Mary Prince's story "in her own words" before a ghosted audience from various periods in history. The audience members both challenge and affirm Mary's harrowing account of enslavement in the West Indies.
